We all need the mineral fluoride to protect our teeth from harmful attacks of food acids that can lead to cavities and tooth decay. Most people get appropriate amounts of fluoride by means of their drinking water and the foods they eat, but that’s not always the case. If you drink mostly bottled water or you use a home water filtration system, you may not be getting the amount of fluoride you need. To ensure that you get the required amount of fluoride, the office of Miller Family Dentistry offers professional fluoride application treatments.
At one time, it was believed that only children needed fluoride treatments, but nowadays, an increasing number of adults are getting them as well, particularly if they run a higher risk of tooth decay due to:
- Alcohol/drug abuse or an eating disorder
- Poor oral hygiene
- Inadequate professional dental care
- Dry mouth (saliva helps to wash bacteria off teeth)
- Overgrowth of oral bacteria
- Poor diet/nutrition
A topical fluoride treatment at our office involves the application of a professional strength fluoride varnish or gel to the teeth. The gel is left on for a while and then washed off. It is advisable not to eat or drink anything or to rinse the mouth for one hour after the treatment, so that your teeth can absorb the fluoride properly. Once absorbed, fluoride works to re-mineralize the enamel and protect it against acid attacks. Fluoride can also help in repairing early stages of tooth decay.
