Crowns and Bridges
Dental Crowns and Bridges The office of Miller Family Dentistry provides a variety of treatments for restoring your oral health to a perfect state. One of the restorative solutions we offer is porcelain crowns and bridges. Crowns Dental crowns are restorations that protect cracked, damaged, or broken down teeth. Crowns add strength to a damaged tooth and preserve its functionality. They are sometimes referred to as caps mainly because they sit on top of an existing tooth and cover its entire outer surface. The first step in getting a crown is cleaning the tooth to remove decay.
Then, the shape of the prepared tooth is slightly tapered to allow the crown sit comfortably on top of it. All of this is done under the effect of local anesthesia. Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression is taken. A temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it while the permanent one is made in a dental lab. During your next visit, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent one is cemented to the tooth. Bridges Dental bridges are used to replace teeth that have been lost. Bridges are anchored to neighboring teeth at each end of the gap. This requires the teeth adjacent to the bridge to be ground down to accommodate the space needed by the abutment teeth. Bridges can be either fixed or removable. The procedure of installing a dental bridge on the teeth begins by taking impressions of your mouth. The natural teeth adjacent to the gap are then prepared by shaving off a part of their enamel. A temporary restoration is placed over them while your bridge is prepared. Once ready, the permanent bridge is placed on the teeth. To know more about crown and bridge restorations, please contact our office for a consultation. You can call us at (586) 558-6684.
